According to the World Health Organization, about one in six couples or about 180 million people in the world face the problem of infertility. Assisted fertilization, in which developing embryos created in a laboratory from human gametes are placed in a woman's uterus, is often the only way couples with fertility problems can become parents. In the world, more than 1.5 million cycles of assisted reproduction treatment are performed per year, after which more than 350 thousand are born every year. newborns, but less than a third of couples have a baby after assisted fertilization. The success of the procedure depends on many reasons: the quality of the germ cells - eggs and sperm - which is often determined by the age of the couple, the viability of early-stage embryos and blastocysts, genomic mutations of the embryo, the receptivity of the uterine lining and other circumstances. The market needs a complex assessment system that combines the results of all possible studies and is able to increase the efficiency of IVF. Such a digital solution, based on medical knowledge and artificial intelligence technologies, is planned to be created by high-tech companies in cooperation with the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.
The applicant of the project, UAB "Solita" - an information technology company, since 2018. developing digital solutions for clients of all sizes and industry sectors, conducting scientific, experimental and technological development research, creating innovative products.
Project partner "Power of Eye" UAB is a high-tech company founded in 2012 that successfully develops, produces, and distributes dedicated computer vision algorithms. Their know-how in developing various algorithms enables business expansion and offering feature extraction methods from histological images with result visualization.
Project partner Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) is an academic institution with extensive research and experimental development experience. LSMU focuses on innovative scientific knowledge and competency development through independent high-level research and technological advancement. LSMU Reproductive Medicine Center scientists and specialists will join as partners for the project's research needs.
These three highly competent partners aim to create a unique, research-based solution supported by AI and machine learning methods. This solution integrates clinical, molecular, transcriptomic, immunological, and hormonal markers with automated (AI-based) endometrial tissue histological assessment to improve IVF process management. The MetaEndo multi-diagnostic system is a new individualized healthcare service that will significantly improve IVF efficiency, cost-effectiveness, success rates, and reduce treatment duration. MetaEndo will use deep neural networks (DNN) and automated decision-making algorithms to link digital endometrial biopsy histological images with specific histological features and individual patient characteristics. MetaEndo will help better understand uterine mucosa functional layer structure, morphology, cellular interactions, and correctly interpret the limited optimal receptivity or implantation window time.
MetaEndo will help fertility clinics improve diagnostics and IVF process efficiency, better allocate human and financial resources, increase service cost-effectiveness, and apply more consistent treatment. The MetaEndo system will significantly impact medical science by enabling advanced diagnostics, allowing researchers and clinical groups to share knowledge and utilize AI methods.
